Excercising Your Rabbit

For above ground hutches, a ramp or steps leading from the daytime compartment of the hutch to the ground of a securely fenced enclosure will provide a more natural environment for your pets. Sink the perimeter fence 45cm below ground level or cover the floor area with mesh to prevent rabbits burrowing out.

An alternative is a portable 'ark' from around 180cm by 90cm for rabbits in above ground hutches. This allows access to grass and an opportunity to run about. Move the ark to a fresh area of grass daily. Part of the ark should be covered to provide shelter from sudden showers and  hot sun. Always provide fresh drinking water. Cover the base with widely spaced mesh to prevent escapes. At night, rabbits should be returned  to the hutch.

[Temporary runs can be erected in the back yard, but animals must be 'supervised' so as to prevent escapes and ensure rabbits are safe from other pets. A secure balcony can also be a good excercise area - always provide water and food as well if rabbits are out for extended periods.]

As rabbits usually soil only one area of their living quarters, some owners enjoy having them indoors for excercise. Keep the litter tray or newspaper in the same spot, but do not expect your rabbit to be housetrained unless it is brought indoors on a regular basis.  Your rabbit may in fact tell you where the best place to put the litter tray is! Ensure that windows and doors are shut and that dogs and cats are not present.

[All rabbits require excercise, preferably on a daily basis. Even those rabbits in large hutches will appreciate a change of scenery, providing valuable stimulation outside of their familiar and often static environment.]
