| Creepy Crawly Communities Place a large white sheet under the branch of a tree or shrub. Give the branch a really good shake - without breaking it! Examine the animals you have caught. As you try to identify the animals, look for the numbers of legs and the presence of wings to help you group them. Some common animals are likely to be; jumping spiders, beetles, caterpillars and small flies. Moth Trap Use a white sheet as above, but this time hang it on a washing line on a warm night after dark. Standing behind the sheet, shine a strong torch through it. Take turns at investigating all the different shapes and sizes of moths that arrive. Make a Pitfall Trap Use two plastic cups, one inside the other. Bury the cups in garden or wooded area so that the lip of the top cup is level with the ground. Place some fruit and cat biscuits inside the cup. Cover the top partially with a rock or piece of bark. Check your trap daily and be sure to release your captures after you have observed them. Finding Spiders Webs Using a spray bottle, spray a fine mist over hedges, shrubs and garden plants. This works especially well on a sunny day to magically reveal hidden spider homes. Compare the different types of webs you find. There are lots more activities to try in the Creepy Crawly Teacher's Kit. |
