IDEAS FOR CLASSROOM EXPERIMENTS AND STUDY:

Brine Shrimp Hatcheries
- watch hundreds of tiny shrimp hatch. These little crustaceans will swim towards a light source - try observing them under different light conditions and watch how they react.

Live Plants - Measure the rate of growth under different light and nutrient conditions or measure the amount of oxygen given off.

Test Kits - Test water quality from different water sources - tap water, streamwater, rainwater, aquarium water etc. See how ammonia, nitrite, phosphate and pH differ. You may be suprised at the results!

SCHOOL HOLIDAY AQUARIUM CARE
Slow release food blocks are available from the food section of the aquatic department. These last up to 10 days and will reduce the number of visits back to school to feed the fish. Hint: Do a 30% water change when you return to replace the feeding block to keep your fish happy and healthy over the hols.

The Aquarium Troubleshooting Guide

Maintaining a healthy environment for your fish is the best defence against disease in the aquarium. Poor environmental conditions must be identified and corrected before beginning disease treatment.
Disease causing organisms are always present at a low density in the aquarium. Poor environmental conditions result in stress to fish, allowing these organisms to overwhelm the fishes natural immunity. Proper care and a small amount of regular maintenance will greatly lower the incidence of disease.
