IDEAS FOR CLASSROOM EXPERIMENTS AND STUDY:
Brine Shrimp Hatcheries - watch hundreds of tiny shrimp hatch. These little crustaceans will swim towards a light source - try observing them under different light conditions and watch how they react.
Live Plants - Measure the rate of growth under different light and nutrient conditions or measure the amount of oxygen given off.
Test Kits - Test water quality from different water sources - tap water, streamwater, rainwater, aquarium water etc. See how ammonia, nitrite, phosphate and pH differ. You may be suprised at the results!
SCHOOL HOLIDAY AQUARIUM CARE Slow release food blocks are available from the food section of the aquatic department. These last up to 10 days and will reduce the number of visits back to school to feed the fish. Hint: Do a 30% water change when you return to replace the feeding block to keep your fish happy and healthy over the hols.

Daily observation of fish is important in the early recognition of disease. Changes in colour, swimming habit and behaviour can all serve as early warning signs of disease.
Most commercially available fish foods are nutritionally balanced to meet all the dietary needs of aquarium fish. Tropical fish and goldfish have different nutritional requirements, making it important to use the appropriate food for each group.
Algae is a normal part of a pond. Rivers and lakes all have algae in them. If algae was absent, this could indicate that there was a problem. However, when there is excessive algae this means that the pond environment is out of balance...
Maintaining a healthy environment for your fish is the best defence against disease in the aquarium. Poor environmental conditions must be identified and corrected before beginning disease treatment. Disease causing organisms are always present at a low density in the aquarium. Poor environmental conditions result in stress to fish, allowing these organisms to overwhelm the fishes natural immunity. Proper care and a small amount of regular maintenance will greatly lower the incidence of disease.
Investing in a canister filter is like an 'insurance policy' for the aquarium. It means that there is less worry about leaving the aquarium without water changes over holidays, fish stocking levels can be stretched somewhat and a few mistakes can be soaked up.
